Dan Houser’s Absurd Ventures is hinting at several upcoming initiatives, including an animated series and an action-comedy adventure game.
“Get ready to encounter some unconventional heroes (and witness their struggles),” the firm remarked in a statement. This announcement arrives shortly after South Korean game developer and publisher Smilegate made a strategic investment and entered into partnership with Absurd Ventures, a gaming studio established by Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser.
Houser dedicated over 20 years to Rockstar Games, steering the creative vision of the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises, which collectively have surpassed 550 million units sold globally. (Hypothetically, that translates to around $33 billion worth of video games). Houser departed from Rockstar Games in 2020.
Absurd Ventures plans to unveil this universe through animation projects later in the year. Additionally, an original story-driven action-comedy adventure game set in the Absurdaverse is currently being developed at Absurd Ventures studios.
For now, that’s all they’re willing to share. Absurd Ventures is a media company generating new intellectual properties across various platforms, including video games, live-action and animated television, films, fiction podcasts, books, comic books, and more.
Original properties from Absurd Ventures encompass the sci-fi thriller realm A Better Paradise, the crime fiction landscape American Caper, and the comedic satire universe Absurdaverse. In a strategy reminiscent of The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Absurd Ventures is experimenting with concepts in multiple formats.
The firm has already rolled out a best-selling audio fiction series within the “A Better Paradise” universe and will be launching an American Caper comic series along with Absurdaverse animation projects in 2025. Houser, Absurd Ventures is situated in Santa Monica, California, with additional studio locations in Marin County, California.
